Brainerd Baptist Church-Sanctuary

Brainerd Baptist Church was organized in 1928, moving into its first
building in 1929. A new 700-seat sanctuary costing $37,000 was dedicated in
1942, and a 125-seat balcony was added in 1953. A Wurlitzer Series 20
electronic organ was dedicated in 1949. Evelyn Gibbs was hired as organist,
among other odd jobs, the same year at $10.00 a week. She served the church
for another 48 years. Plans were made for the purchase of a
soon-to-be-replaced 1922 2/10 Bennett organ in 1955 from Central
Presbyterian Church in 1955, but Central burned down before the organ could
be moved. The Wurlitzer was traded in for a Baldwin Model 10 in 1958. A
new 1450-seat colonial-style sanctuary was dedicated in 1966, along with the
60-rank Austin. The sanctuary is reknowned for its immense Waterford
crystal chandelier that was made in 1867 for a Saratoga NY hotel at a cost
of $25,000. The church purchased it for $4,000. A large 246-bell Maas-Rowe
carillon, the first of its type, was given to the church in 1977.
