St. Timothy’s Episcopal, Signal Mtn

St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church was formed as a mission of St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church in 1952. The congregation first met in a home on Cherokee
Lane. In 1953, longtime Signal Mountain residents Olive Marr and Paul S.
Mathes donated 8.5 acres of land for buildings, and the original church was
completed in 1954 at a cost of $50.000. The mission grew rapidly and, in
1955, was granted full parish status. The Rev. Joseph T. Urban, then
associate rector at St. Paul’s, became the first rector at St. Timothy’s; he
served until 1958.

Further construction of parish and classroom buildings took place in 1963
and 1968. In 1987 the sanctuary and parish hall were renovated and
enlarged. In the fall of 2000, the congregation dedicated and consecrated a
new 400-seat church and classroom building, with the original nave becoming
a 60-seat chapel and part of a spacious narthex. It is now a beautiful
facility and worth the trip up the mountain to see. The new nave has
wonderful acoustics.

The first pipe organ was installed in 1965. It was renovated, enlarged and
moved by Barger & Nix to the rear of the lengthened nave in 1987. In 2004,
the organ was re-engineered, enlarged and moved to the new sanctuary by
Randall Dyer & Associates.

In 2004, the organ was re-installed with a few additions.
