Brainerd United Methodist Church

Brainerd United Methodist Church was established in 1895, when a group who had been meeting for a number or years in a nearby schoolhouse purchased two acres in Brainerd – the site of the present facility. The first building, a wood-frame structure, was completed soon after. The growing congregation completed a new brick building in 1925. It was added to over the years and the present 1000-seat sanctuary was completed in 1955; the first organ in the new sanctuary was a Model 5 Baldwin. When the Moller was installed in 1965, most of the ceiling was hard-plastered and the heavy velvet drapes removed from the windows and over the altar;a new stained-glass window was installed over the altar. A State Trumpet, built by A. R. Schopp’s Sons, was installed by Barger & Nix in 1987. The III Cymbale by the same company was added to the Swell in 1991. In 1994, Schantz installed a new console and converted the switching and combination action to solid-state. In 2003, the chancel was changed from the original divided-choir arrangement to one which has the choir in stepped seating facing directly down the nave; the chancel was extended twelve feet into the nave to increase room in the choir area for instruments or additional singers. The thick walls and hard surfaces make for a wonderful acoustic for the choir, organ and spoken word.
